Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a treatment that involves the use of a specialized acrylic to repair or correct defects in tooth enamel. The acrylic is colored matched to the patients natural teeth and is set and caused to bond to the tooth by exposing it to light that operates on a specific wave length.

BEFORE AFTER

Dental bonding may be used to repair cracked or chipped teeth, as illustrated above, as well as address a variety of other cosmetic issues from discoloration to the size and shape of a patient's natural teeth. It should not, however, be confused with composite resins used to fill cavities. Composite resins are two part acrylics that rely on chemical reaction rather than light waves to harden.

Bonding is perhaps the simplest and least expensive cosmetic dental procedure available. It can generally be completed in a single visit and does not normally involve the removal of large amounts of tooth enamel.

The procedure involves first selecting a shade that matches the patient's natural teeth and then reducing the surface enamel just enough to provide the acrylic a dull or matte surface to adhere to. Next the acrylic is applied to the tooth and carefully shaped and trimmed to approximate the planned finished dimensions.  A special light is then applied to the acrylic to harden and bond it to the tooth surface. The dentist will finish by further trimming and then polishing the hardened acrylic.

The materials utilized in dental bonding have a lifespan of somewhat less than 10 years, and depend on the patient's oral habits to remain clean and stain free. Dental veneers, which are made of porcelain, provide a longer lasting solution.
