Geriatric Dentistry

Geriatric dentistry is a science that is a multidisciplinary and multidimensional approach to the management of the oral health problems of the elderly.

At Deadwood Dental, we believe that the management of older patients requires not only an understanding of the medical and dental aspects of aging, but also of many other factors such as ambulation, independent living, socialization, and sensory function. Our experience has equipped us to overcome many of the barriers that may interfere with providing older patients with dental care, including severe dental complexity, multiple medical conditions, diminished functional status, loss of independence, uninformed attitudes about dental care in old age, and limited finances.

Poor oral health in our senior population may lead to loss of appetite, malnutrition, metabolic disorders, and even the onset of depression. Mental disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer disease are important factors in managing the dental needs of our elderly. In addition, many medications have adverse side effects such as dry mouth, which contributes significantly to dental decay. The effects of aging result in changes in lip posture, chewing efficiency, and ability to swallow and taste and in an increase in diseases of the hard and soft tissues of the mouth. Without proper care and hygiene, our elderly experience a higher incidence of periodontal disease, which has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, and other illnesses.

While a majority of our elderly retain their natural teeth, dental decay, periodontal disease, and loss of teeth in individuals over the age of 65 have reached significant proportions. This backlog of oral disorders, combined with many of the issues discussed above, has required over the years that our staff become both knowledgeable and skilled in providing quality geriatric dental care to our Northern Black Hills seniors.
